Monthly Blinks - Fit reading into your life in 15 minutes

Updated: May 3, 2023

If you are anything like me, I can pick up a novel and read it in one day. However, ask me to read Stephen R Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and its at least a 6 month saga.

In an age of information overload, if you want to make changes in your life or get information, a summary is often more useful and user friendly, with tips that are short and to the point.

Blinkist is an app, that offers you a summary of the book in 15 minutes or less. I have now taken to listening to "Blinks" in the car after the school run; between client meetings and on my way home.

With the election, media negativity, BREXIT, Trump, crime etc all around us and in our face, there seems to be an atmosphere of pessimism; which of course would be the normal result of our external environment; however these are all things we can not control. So what can we control in order to, despite this negativity, still have a purposeful life?

Here are four of my blinks from this month:

1. If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy - Raj Ragjunathan

We can find happiness when we focus on the right things. Put yourself on the right track by finding flow in your everyday life and by making healthy, sincere and loving connections with the people around you. Happiness is not something you have to chase; it comes from within. So remember to breathe, connect with your own intuition and give your mind a rest. Happiness isn’t as unattainable as you might think.

2. Outta Order, Inner Calm - Gretchen Rubin

Creating an orderly home environment helps us gain better control over other aspects of our lives. To make our homes clutter-free we need to develop good habits, make difficult choices about what to discard and have a clear sense of purpose about why we want to change our surroundings.

3. Atomic Habits - James Clear

A tiny change in your behavior will not transform your life overnight. But turn that behavior into a habit that you perform every day and it absolutely can lead to big changes. Changing your life is not about making big breakthroughs or revolutionizing your entire life. Rather, it’s about building a positive system of habits that, when combined, deliver remarkable results.

4. The Millionaire Next Door - Thomas J Stanley

The typical millionaire isn’t all Hollywood glitz and glamour. Many wealthy people live well below their means, saving and budgeting money diligently and spending it intelligently. If you consistently adhere to these simple standards, you too could achieve your wealth ambitions.
